iPhone 3G

Well, have had my iPhone 3G since it's release now. This is the first iPhone I've had, I didn't have the first one, which looking back now, not sure why I didn't really. I was more into Windows Mobile devices at the time, so never really gave it a thought.

My first impressions; so easy to use, the interface is very consumer driven, unlike Windows Mobile devices, which try to replicate the Windows desktop interface which makes them a bit more complicated to use. Having used a TyTn II for a while now, it's no loss to have not quite so much configurablity available to me, it seems the more I changed settings on the TyTn, the less stable it becomes.

Key Features: Wireless is very seamless, nice how it connects without any intervention to previously used networks, email setup also very easy to do and works extremely well.

Missing Features: well, MMS would have to be one. Also, ability to use songs on the device for alarms, etc would have been nice. Battery life not as good as I believed it would be, I'm probably getting about 2 days if I don't use it too much... Finally, I do miss TomTom, must look to see what's available on the iPhone, it probably was my main application on the TyTn and got the most use (second only to email!)

Free GPS Tracking Tool...

Just come across this free to download for one device, GPS tracking tool... 3dTracking

Works quite well and and can be set to run in the background. Have'nt quite managed to get it and TomTom both working at the same time yet though, both recognise the gps unit, but none of the gps data seems to get through to the tracking application...

Ho hum!!

WiFi in UK Cities and Towns Campaign

A Channel 5 presenter in the UK, Jason Bradbury, is running a campaign to get the Government to deploy free WiFi in the UK's Towns and cities.

As a frequent traveler myself through work, I'm all for this.

Which SatNav??

My dad asked me earlier today for a recommendation on a SatNav to buy. Here are his requirements:

Can move it from Car to Car.
Simple to use.
Includes European roads.
Oh, and "Safety Camera" POI's.

Now, I tend to use TomTom Navigator on a PDA and as useful as it is, he doesn't really need a PDA. So, initially I thought of one of the TomTom Go models. The 710 seems to fit the bill - portable, European maps and a pretty simple dedicated machine...

Anyone suggest anything better? Not sure there is such a thing...

Just read this on The Register about being able to turn a Dell Desktop off via Text message…worth a read.

Steve has a nice post about OpenDNS, an alternative DNS provider aiming to provide a quicker name resolution service. It also has built in phishing capabilities.

One thing I did notice was that I'm pointing to one of their US DNS servers (they have a London based one coming soon for us Brits) and it's still quicker than my old one.

I can honestly say, I just tried and it and, thanks Steve, it is faster than my ISP anyway. Defintely worth a try, instructions on their site here...

MDA Vario II Weak Signal???

Apparently a review was done on the MDA Vario II that suggests it has weak 3G reception.

Not good, I was hoping to get one of these…sigh….well, we’ll see hey.
